Knut the adorable polar bear made headlines last year, when his mother a resident of the Berlin Zoo in German, abandoned him. Since then, Knut has become a star of sorts, with a book about his life, his own blog and now a documentary on the first year of his life.

"Knut and his Friend or "Knut und Seine Freunde" premiered to rave reviews at the Berlin Zoo on Sunday night. The movie is the behind-the-scenes story about Knut's first year, which started rather dramatically when his mother abandoned him.

Thomas Doeflein, the chief bear keeper at the zoo decided to hand-raise Knut and his brother, who unfortunately died in four days. The movie shows how Thomas moved into Knut's cell, leaving his own family behind to raise the baby polar bear.

He bottle fed the bear, initially every two hours, gave it baths, brushed its fur and even played him "Elvis" songs on his guitar. Thomas did not leave Knut for even a couple of hours until the bear was four months old.

As you can see in the picture above, Knut is now a strapping 250 pound, one-year old and not as cute and cuddly as he used to be.

However, he continues to remain popular both in Germany, where the attendance to the Berlin Zoo has grown to record levels, and internationally, where kids and adults love to read about his escapades. The movie is a natural finale to his exciting first year and a sure hit amongst both adults and kids!
