23-year old Norwegien snowboarder Torstein Horgmo, made history on Friday night, after landing the first Big-Air triple cork in the 15-year history of the Winter X-Games. For those of you not familiar with snowboarding lingo, it means performing three 360° flips in mid-air, before making a perfect landing on the snow.
This is not the first time this amazing snowboarder has landed a Big-Air triple cork. In June 2010, he made headlines by becoming the first snowboarder to land one, whilst filming a commercial. However, the conditions then were ideal - It was a perfect sunny day, the ramp he pushed off from was longer and built specially to attempt a trick as big as this and, most important of all, the snowboarder was in perfect health.
Things were a little less ideal at the Winter Games venue in Aspen, Colorado, this Friday. Not only was the jump ramp much smaller allowing for less time to complete all three loops, but also, the landing was icy making it a little more dangerous. However, the biggest challenge was the snowboarder, who was competing with broken ribs! But, none of that seemed to matter!
While Torstein was happy to win the gold, he was not too thrilled at his own performance, which he thought wasn't as perfect or flawless as the one he had landed in June! Judging from the cheers and the fact the he impressed the judges enough to nail the gold medal, we beg to differ.
