You just can't keep a good girl down . . . unless you use the proper methods.

Piper McCloud can fly. Just like that. Easy as pie.

Sure, she hasn't mastered reverse propulsion and her turns are kind of sloppy, but she's real good at loop-the-loops.

Problem is, the good folk of Lowland County are afraid of Piper. And her ma's at her wit's end. So it seems only fitting that she leave her parents' farm to attend a top-secret, maximum-security school for kids with exceptional abilities.

School is great at first with a bunch of new friends whose skills range from super-strength to super-genius. (Plus all the homemade apple pie she can eat!) But Piper is special, even among the special. And there are consequences.

Consequences too dire to talk about. Too crazy to consider. And too dangerous to ignore.

At turns exhilarating and terrifying, Victoria Forester's debut novel has been praised by Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight saga, as "the oddest/sweetest mix of Little House on the Prairie and X-Men...Prepare to have your heart warmed." The Girl Who Could Fly is an unforgettable story of defiance and courage about an irrepressible heroine who can, who will, who must . . . fly.

This title has Common Core connections.

Praise for Victoria Forester and The Girl Who Could Fly:

"It's the oddest/sweetest mix of Little House on the Prairie and X-Men. I was smiling the whole time (except for the part where I cried). I gave it to my mom, and I'm reading it to my kids―it's absolutely multigenerational. Prepare to have your heart warmed." Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight saga

"In this terrific debut novel, readers meet Piper McCloud, the late-in-life daughter of farmers...The story soars, just like Piper, with enough loop-de-loops to keep kids uncertain about what will come next....Best of all are the book's strong, lightly wrapped messages about friendship and authenticity and the difference between doing well and doing good."--Booklist, Starred Review

"Forester's disparate settings (down-home farm and futuristic ice-bunker institute) are unified by the rock-solid point of view and unpretentious diction… any child who has felt different will take strength from Piper's fight to be herself against the tide of family, church, and society."--The Horn Book Review

I starts out a little slow, but then it is awesome book. Lots of excitement. Lots of action. It is kind of like Harry Potter meets the X-Men

The Girl Who Could Fly was amazing! I didn't want it to end! It has such a unique storyline. The characters had a lot of depth. Loved this book!

With a wonderful story that follows Jane Austen's signature of spinning everything around on you, this book is amazing. Being pressured by the evil forces around her, Piper struggles to define her beliefs and find the difference between right and wrong, while at the same time spread love to everyone around her. But when Piper is gone, her friends have to remember her philosophies of love and forgiveness.

This book is about a simple, talkative, home-schooled farm girl, called Piper McCloud. Normal, right? Anything but. Piper can fly. She has been ever since she was a newborn. But when Piper's mom finds out, when warns Piper not to do it again. Piper doesn't listen to her Mom and continues flying, but now secretly. Soon, she is able to fly around the town. A few days later, Piper's mom Betty announces that they are going to he Fourth of July picnic. Piper gets excited because she could make friends there. But Milly Mae Miller, the source of the town's gossip spreads a rumor that Piper is crazy. Piper makes a friend called Susie Miller but during a conversation with her, Piper mentions that she saw Susie's mother kicking the butt of a dog. Susie gets scared, and not knowing that Piper can fly, she thinks that Piper is stalking her. Later, Piper embarrasses herself by always missing the ball during a game of kickball. Milly Mae was teasing her. So, Piper flies out to catch the ball. Everyone stares at her and the next day, reporters gather around her house to have the inside scoop on "The Girl who could fly". It attracts the attensiom of a woman called Dr. Hellion who works with kids with 'special abilities' After a visit from Dr. Hellion, Piper agrees to go to Dr. Hellion's academy on a condition that she doesn't fly. Her father gives her a hand carved bird before she leaves. When she arrives she takes the elevator to Level 13, Dr. Hellion explains that they foster plans and animals also with unique abilities too. Piper meets other members of the academy as well, including a girl named Bella and a boy named Conrad. At ;lunch Piper's glass slides back and forth, which is eventually found to be controlled by a girl called Lilly. Piper turns the tables on her spilling the water on Lully's dress. Back at class, Conrad bullies Jasper, a boy who forgot his talent , and bashes his basket up. He tricks Piper into flying to save herself from falling to her death, and Piper almost gets expelled from the academy. At dinner, Bella is seen making rainbows. They cheer, but they discover that Bella is crying. Piper later bonds with Dr. Hellion and the kids. Conrad pushes Bella to her tipping point and Bella steals Piper's bird and chucks it in the trash. She fights with Conrad and they are sent to Dr. Hellion's office. On the way Piper escapes and meets a growling rose, which a machine nearby sprays something black on it. A tiny drop land on Piper's arm and burns her. Next, when meets a turtle with a huge black crushing its back and Piper decides to leave her bird and help the animals. The turtle gets freed from the block and escapes out of a window. While trying to save it, Piper finds a black cricket who she later names Sebastian. She finds out that he is being bound by sticky glue. Using Q tips she frees it. She hears Jessie and Moo coming, so she hides in the room and finds a giraffe. It is being held by chains. While hiding, she hears Dr. Hellion's voice. When the scientists find that Sebastian is missing, CCTV reveals that Piper took it. Dr. Hellion heads back to her office, thinking that Piper is there. Quickly, Piper flies to Dr. Hellion's office and spots a phone, which she uses to dial her Mom and Dad. Conrad comes in and ends the call and said the phone is bugged. He hands Piper her bird, saying he made a replica and threw the replica in the trash. He tells her to keep the cricket and play along. Conrad said that Bella took the cricket and Piper just touched it. Dr. Hellion asks about the fight about the bird, and Conrad denies having anything to do with it. After lights out, Conrad explains that the institute, called I.N.S.A.N.E, tries to make everything that walks thorough its doors normal. Through the food, they put a poison that might deactivate your abilities and do the same thing to the animals. But if all fails, they die. Conrad was only picking on Piper so she could wake up and fly. Piper refuses to escape with hin unless the rest of them are going. Piper then starts encouraging other students to use their posers in a good way. The only person she can't get an answer from is Jasper a boy who i scheduled to graduate next (when someone has fully lost their power). The kids make an escape plan, but fail when Dr. Hellion catches them in the act. The Dr. puts Piper in a M.O.L.D. and waits for Piper to succumb. Sebastian then comes and sings to her revealing his talent, but Dr. Hellion kills her with agent A's shoe, which causes Piper to black out. Later, the kids find out that Piper forgot who she is and is crippled. Conrad suggests that they leave without her, but Jasper refuses and finally remember's his talent, which is healing. He heals Piper, and she remembers who she is and how to fly. When the kids go out to see the sun, Dr. Hellion is there with a stunt baton. I very strongly recommend this book to-everyone! Everyone should have the wonderful experience of reading this heartwarming book by Victoria Forester. The Girl Who Could Fly is one of my favorite books. It has twists and turns at every corner, with a lovable main character and a villain who isn't all evil. I deeply enjoyed every aspect of this book, especially learning about the supporting casts' backstory. I cried, laughed, and had a ton of fun reading this book. Struggling to be yourself+superpowers=an amazing story line, and add in a secret school with some powers of its own that has more secrets than its entrance, and you have one of the best books ever! Enjoy this riveting story that will keep you thinking about it long after the last page is turned.

Gorgeously written and described to perfection. It's like . . . you can almost feel like you could fly too, and it is such an indescribable sensation. Now that the author has you in her clutches and you are hooked to the book, she whooshes your heart away when something terrible happens. It was so dreadful I was almost in tears. But then, a ray of hope shines through, then, joy! The book concludes itself as lightly and pleasantly, yet hopefully.

A good book. It tells the story of a young farm girl named Piper, who has been kept from society by her mother her whole life.

this book was really sad because of the way some of the children were treated. this book was also a little bit scary, to me at least.

This was an interesting story about how a girl can be different and still be the same. This is a story about being true to yourself and your morals. This story is about a girl named Piper who has always been able to hover above the ground. Her parents discourage it, but behind their back she practices her flying. Then she goes to a place called I.N.S.A.N.E.. There she finds others who have powers as strange as hers. But is her dream come true paradise? Or is something else going on? This is an awesome story about lost dreams and fears as well as fitting in. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone as a must-read!
