Hatchet is one of the best books I have ever read. I would give it a five star rating because it's almost 100% realistic and has wild animal encounters and natural disasters. I would recommend this from age 10 up because there are some brutal ways of surviving in the book.The book starts off with a 13 year old boy named Brian Robeson who is going to see his father in Canada because his parents are divorced. His parents are divorced all because of his mother's secret. While flying in the plane a series of disastrous events happen leaving the plane in a lake and Brian stranded all alone with only a hatchet. The book stays interesting as you are always wondering is Brian going to survive and is he going to get rescued? Also the book is part of a 5 book series with equal greatness such as Brian's Winter which is the sequel to hatchet if you don’t like the ending that is already there. Brian is one of the most skilled and luckiest people that I have ever read about. That is why he is my favorite character in the book. He is also mainly the only character because the book focuses on him stranded but it also talks about his life through flashbacks and dreams. My favorite part is when Brian compares his surroundings now to his surroundings back in New York where he is from because it is just a little funny seeing it from old Brian’s perspective. The comparison also shows how scary it would have been to be Brian. If you feel like reading an action packed, fictional, survival story I recommend reading Hatchet and the entire series of Brian's adventures.
